Het Common festival is het eerste festival van zijn soort. Het is een niet-commercieel, veelzijdig festival dat in meerdere steden wordt georganiseerd (met Mechelen, Maastricht, Gent en Brussel). Organisaties voor het goede doel, muzikanten, stand-up comedians, poëten, schrijvers, ze komen allemaal!

Wat doen we met studiegroepen, actiegroepen, artiesten, de culturele sector en ZELFORGANISATIE? Het grote namiddagdebat!

Om 14u starten we met de workshops en discussies. Radio Centraal (106.7 fm) neemt om 15u mee het initiatief om een debat over de toekomst van alternatieve media op te starten (en brengt ook live een uitzending).
We leren diezelfde namiddag ook zaadbommen maken en verdiepen ons samen in de wereld van permacultuur, LETS, coöperatieven en de transitiebeweging.
Jeroen Van Handsaeme vertelt ons meer over de shockdoctrine en economie.
Ivo Janssen (ABVV) treedt in discussie met vredesactivisten, milieu-activisten en anderen over sociale actie.

Dark energy, which forms almost three-quarters of the universe, is the most mysterious stuff known to man. A new set of Chandra X-Ray Observatory data, however, has given scientists good information on what dark energy might actually be.

Turns out, it looks suspiciously like Einstein's cosmological constant, a factor he added to his theory of general relativity. He once considered it his greatest blunder.

Voyage to the bottom of the sea

Onlangs lekte uit dat China een bemande diepzee-duikboot uit test die zo maar liefst een diepte van 7000 meter aan kan. Het gevaarte zal dienen voor onderzoek en transport naar een onderzeebasis. Fase één moet afgerond zijn tegen 2010. Hiermee opent China de race naar de oceaanbodem.

"Nog interessanter zijn de onlangs ontdekte gashydraten. Dit is een substantie waarin water en methaan gemengd zitten. Op de juiste diepte - minimaal 1500 meter - en bij welbepaalde druk en temperatuur zitten die gashydraten als ijs in de zeebodem. Een gigantische potentiële energiebron, gelijk aan al wat er op de aarde ooit aan fossiele brandstoffen voorradig was, voor de mens met exploitatie begon."

The Sound of the Aurora

If you happen to be reasonably close to one of the Earth's magnetic poles, the next time there’s a particularly intense aurora, go outside. Get as far as you can from sources of noise – traffic, barking dogs, TVs – and listen. Listen carefully.

If conditions are right, you may hear some unusual noises. Earwitnesses have said the sound is like radio static, a small animal rustling through dry grass and leaves, or the crinkling of a cellophane wrapper. Inuit folklore says it's the sound of the spirits of the dead, either playing a game or trying to communicate with the living.

It’s the sound of the aurora itself. And the cause is currently unknown. Understanding the phenomenon is made more difficult by the fact that though there are many anecdotal reports, the sound has yet to be recorded.

Could a wind turbine that sucks water out of the air supply enough water for the whole world?

A wind-driven device could provide an unlimited water supply by harvesting water from the air, says its Australian inventor.

But critics are asking if it's too good to be true.

Dr Max Whisson, a retired medical specialist turned inventor, says he has designed a highly efficient wind turbine that can run a refrigeration system to cool air and condense moisture from it.
