Creative Commons Explained

Maybe you've never seen of it. Maybe you've started catching glimpses of it in the most unexpected of places. Maybe you've even considered using it yourself, but never knew for certain what it really means.

Undercity.org

Welcome to Undercity.org!

All content on this site is the work of Steve Duncan, unless otherwise noted.

About me and this site:
I’m a historian, photographer, and writer, based in Brooklyn, NY. I’m also an “urban explorer”-- I try to find the hidden and forgotten spaces and bits of history that exist in every man-made environment, and especially in large cities.

I’m particularly fascinated by underground infrastructure and environments. One of the most interesting things I’ve found is that, especially in cities, going underground means going back in time, and seeing things that have remained unchanged and perhaps unseen since they were first constructed fifty, a hundred, or a hundred and fifty years ago.

I also visit abandoned places-- factories, theaters, asylums, hospitals, etc. Again, what fascinates me is that in places that have been abandoned and untouched for years, there is a direct link to the past.

With my photography, I try to capture both the sense of history that I find in these places, as well as the excitement and adventure that comes of seeing something unique that few others will ever have the chance to see.

When you’re looking at these photos, remind yourself that in addition to the city you see around you, there’s another city that you only see hints of-- a city of interconnected tunnels and inaccessible rooftops, of steam and sewer and water pipes, a city of century-old abandoned subway stations and forgotten foundations of buildings and bright graffiti paintings, all overlaid with the rich stories of the millions of lives that have all added their own threads to the fabric of the city.

Gallery of Computation | generative artifacts

"I write computer programs to create graphic images.

With an algorithmic goal in mind, I manipulate the work by finely crafting the semantics of each program. Specific results are pursued, although occasionally surprising discoveries are made.

I believe all code is dead unless executing within the computer. For this reason I distribute the source code of my programs in modifiable form to encourage life and spread love. Opening one's code is a beneficial practice for both the programmer and the community. I appreciate modifications and extensions of these algorithms. Please send me your experiences."

Mudd Math Fun Facts: Bike with Square Wheels

Unwise Microwave Oven Experiments

Are you a kid? Does your microwave oven belong to your parents? If so, then don't even THINK about trying any of these experiments. I'm serious. If I wreck my microwave oven, I can buy another. Also, I'm a professional electrical engineer. I know enough physics and RF effects to take correct safety precautions when I'm experimenting. But you don't know the precautions, so you should be smart: read and enjoy my writing, but don't duplicate my tests unless you grow up to become an electronics tech, engineer, etc., and buy your OWN microwave oven.

Terrible week for Cindy Sheehan, peace protester

By Sam Knight, Times Online

...

Instead of coming outside to visit the protest camp, Mr Bush has sent two senior officials, including Stephen Hadley, his National Security Adviser, to talk to Mrs Sheehan. For the most part, Mr Bush seems determined to enjoy his month-long holiday.

He has been spending his time fly-fishing and using his chainsaw. Tomorrow, Lance Armstrong, the Texan winner of seven Tour de France races, is coming over for a mountain bike ride. Mr Bush is also catching up on his history, reading books on Tsar Alexander II, the influenza epidemic of 1919 and salt.

Adbusters : Veg My Ride

I want every person on this planet to know about this. I just spent the day in Ojai, California with Joel and Rebecca Woolf. Joel installed one of his custom designed fuel systems in my diesel sedan and I am now driving around LA burning nothing but used restaurant vegetable oil as fuel. This is one of the best choices I have ever made.

The Book of Earths

Tetrahedral Earth (Public Domain Image)

The Book of Earths

by Edna Kenton

[1928]

This is a compendium of theories of the shape of the Earth, along with a great deal of 'Earth Mystery' lore. Richly illustrated, the Book of Earths includes many unusual theories, including Columbus' idea that the Earth is literally pear-shaped, modern theories that the Earth was originally tetrahedral, and so on. Kenton also covers many traditional theories including the ancient Babylonians and Egyptians, Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, and those of the Peruvians, Aztecs and Mongols. She also discusses modern alternative theories such as that of Reed and Koresh. Strangely enough, she misses or ignores the modern flat earth theory of Rowbotham. This is the only apparent omission in this definitive study.

NASA's Spitzer Finds Hidden, Hungry Black Holes

Most of the biggest black holes in the universe have been eating cosmic meals behind closed doors – until now.

This false-color image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope shows a distant galaxy (yellow) that houses a quasar, a super-massive black hole circled by a ring, or torus, of gas and dust.

Credit: NASA

With its sharp infrared eyes, NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope peered through walls of galactic dust to uncover what may be the long-sought missing population of hungry black holes known as quasars.

Art Teachers, are you are teaching the color wheel wrong?

Schools have been teaching the color wheel wrong for 100 years. Red, Yellow and Blue are not the primary colors. I'm mad and I want the State's Schools Standards changed. I developed a Real Color Wheel with the real primary colors and I'm going to talk about it.
You are welcome to comment.

Letterboxing with Mark & Sue

Letterboxing with Mark & Sue: "What is Letterboxing?
Letterboxing enthusiasts hide and hunt weatherproof containers in remote or scenic places. Each container holds a logbook, a rubber stamp and stamp pad. The planter of the letterbox distributes clues to it's location via the internet, Word of Mouth, on websites or via other means. Clues can be easy to difficult. Finding a letterbox may require a combination of skills such as mapreading, orienteering, and puzzle-solving.

Letterboxers carry their own logbook and personal stamp when hunting for hidden boxes. Upon finding a letterbox, they will imprint their own logbook using the found stamp, and leave their own stamping or personalization in the letterbox's logbook. Some artistic letterboxers carve and even design their own stamps and logbooks. Letterboxes are hidden in various locations throughout the world.

Letterboxing has its beginnings in Dartmoor National Park in England, where the first letterbox at Cranmere Pool was placed in 1854 by a Dartmoor guide named James Perrott, who left his calling card in a container there while guiding tourists through Dartmoor. "

Visit the skeletal remains of a cold war weapon

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This presentation will take you on a full tour of a decommissioned, abandoned underground missile complex. The site was opened many years ago by explorers and vandals, and in fact the technology therein was nearly obsolete by the time the bases were completed in 1963, so there's little "secret" about it beyond the location of these sites, which we will not reveal here.

WE WERE VIOLATING FEDERAL TRESPASSING LAWS BY VISITING THIS INSTALLATION, AND WE WERE RISKING OUR HEALTH/LIVES IN THE PROCESS. WE ALSO WERE CAUGHT... THIS WAS SECOND DEGREE CRIMINAL TRESPASS. FELONY CHARGES WILL HAUNT YOU THE REST OF YOUR LIFE! EVEN IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, THEY'RE WATCHING. PLEASE ... DO NOT TRY TO ENTER ONE OF THESE SITES YOURSELF! HAD ONE OF US BEEN HURT BENEATH THE SURFACE, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE THE VICTIM/BODY, GIVEN THE CONDITION OF THE ENTRANCE, NOT TO MENTION THE PRESENCE OF ASBESTOS AND OTHER CHEMICALS IN THE TUNNELS. BECAUSE OF THE POOR AIR CIRCULATION, THERE IS ALSO A SIGNIFICANT CHANCE THAT THE RADIOACTIVE GAS 'RADON' BUILDS UP DOWN THERE, TOO. THE LONG TERM HEALTH RISKS ARE NOT WORTH IT JUST TO SEE SOME RUSTED MACHINES. WE HAVE BROUGHT THIS PHOTO-TOUR TO YOU SO THAT YOU WON'T HAVE TO GO THERE YOURSELF TO SEE IT. MISSILE BASES LIKE THIS ONE ARE FOUND ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, MOSTLY IN THE MID-WEST, AND OWNERSHIP USUALLY REVERTS BACK TO THE RANCHER/FARMER, WHO WILL VERY LIKELY BE WATCHING FOR TRESPASSERS WITH A LOADED SHOTGUN.
